      AFAIK They'll only be packaged in if they are referenced somewhere. (Would need to test to be 100% sure though) That is one reason we set up which maps to package, to make sure we don't have anything unused being referenced and packaged in.

    Hi, I'm really enjoying the video and the tutorial is incredibly helpful. I just have a minor error, when I'm trying to make the character jump, the jump animation appears below the floor, and when it's finished it reappears above the floor. Does anyone know what's wrong and how can I fix it?

    I agree with all of this except for the static / dynamic folder split. For personal projects it works, but if you try to do this for an Unreal project at work you will be set on fire for messing with the directory structure.

      The alternative would be to introduce more complex rules in the .gittatributes, but since this video is mostly targeted at beginners I think that would have overcomplicated it

    I'm a UE fanboy, but even I have to ask "why?" I don't understand why anyone would choose to do a 2D game in UE. Paper2D is a thing, but the whole interface revolves around 3D and it feels like it's constantly fighting back when you try to work in 2D. Meanwhile, there is a much better option in Godot, and, as much as I hate to say it, Unity. Not to mention GameMaker and on and on. Unreal Engine is amazing. IMO there is no close competitor and I have never understood anyone choosing to use any other engine... for 3D. For 2D... different story. All that said, this is a well done tutorial for anyone who does want to.

    Hello! Hope this comment finds you well. I tried following your "how to create a 2D game" by following your old method of using the old 2D system. It worked out and was able to create a simple platformer that way. I now tried the hybrid method which also worked, but I wanted to implement an attack animation and followed your "add melee attacks 2D video" and would break the animation into not working. I then came here and tried using PaperZD, which was easier for me to understand, but when I attack an attack animation, it stops and only when I jump does it reset the animation. I also have it set to using an input from the project. How can I fix this issue using PaperZD? I want to make an RPG styled Hybrid system, and have an attack system in place.

    Recently I had to create a c++ plugin to call the replay system. Apparently it’s only available in c++ so I had to bite the bullet, fortunately I figured it out. BUT THIS! being able to make plugins in Blueprints is just awesome! For reusing functionality, at least!! Thanks!!!

      Does it have a good reason to be that large? In some cases there isn't much you can do about it if you use really high quality textures. If you're still just messing around and unused assets are the culprit setting the maps to package like I said in the video will do the trick. There are also other techniques to make textures smaller, but that might impact quality.

      Hey, with this method it doesn't affect the rest and it depends on your workflow if that's something you want or not. Affecting all projects has the risk to break others if you make changes to the one you're working on, so you'll have to be careful with the changes you make. It is possible to set up using symbolic links or something like that though.

      The people will need to update from the marketplace, after you upload the update. And locally, you’ll have to package again, and copy the package folder to the other project’s folder! The only issue you will have in the marketplace, is if you break compatibility (changing function parameters for example). The older version blueprint will break if that changes. Sometimes you will need it, just measure your impact and document how to fix it!!

    Awesome video man, as always. Do you have in plan to make a video with smooth animation, but not the pixel art. Something like New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja remaster. I played that game, and I really like the animation of the characters and enemies. That animation is not Pixel art, it's HD. I tried to export 60 FPS sprites from spriter, to try it out, and it is smooth. But there is always some jitter. So wondering if there is a way to do it. Thanks again for awesome video

      Hey, not quite sure from looking at that game if they're using bone based animations or just HD sprite sheets. I do have plans to look into HD sprite sheets, but for bone based animations there currently is no free solution AFAIK, so most viewers won't be able to follow along. Somebody is working on a free plugin right now using Unreal engine's built in rigging tools though, so in case that works out I'll definitely cover it.

    Thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunately this doesn't work for me. Ive followed through five and 6 times to the letter and still end up with the same result. Everything works fine up until I add the second additional texture. As soon as I do though the entire sprite glows like the sun. And the _e texture has no effect. I didn't have the default emissive texture so i made one and imported the png. I do have an alternative way of making sections of the sprite glow but its a lot more time consuming. Any helps appreciated. Thanks🤗

    Really informative. I didn't even know this was a feature in unreal. Makes me wonder when you'd want to use this vs niagara effects

      Thanks! I haven't messed around with niagara much yet, but I think an effect like this wouldn't be possible with it. This is used when you have a part of your flipbook that you want to glow, Niagara would be used if you want to spawn a sort of particle effect that isn't directly drawn into your characters sprite sheet.

    For my final project in one of my undergrad CS classes, we had to make a 2D game for the GameBoy Advance... in C, by hand. Granted the point of the class was to learn how computers work, so using an actual engine would've defeated the entire point, but I'm tempted to try and recreate it in this because it seems way easier

      That sounds like an amazing exercise! But yeah if your goal is to actually finish a game, you'll be able to do it 100+ times faster with Unreal or another game engine.

    Recently started getting into game dev with Unreal but then started to get 'which-engine-should-I-choose' paralysis, because I don't want to have to learn a new engine if I decide I want to make 2D games. The amount of stuff to learn in each engine is daunting! Ultimately I don't want to feel like my investment in an engine doesn't limit me from doing what I want--even getting a job in the industry. Your videos make me realize that I can stop worrying about what engine to use and keep going with Unreal

      Glad to hear the video helped you make a decision :) Yeah if your only goal is to make 2D games and that's all you care about Unreal might not be the best choice, but if you want to be a generalist and maybe also want to get a job in the industry you can't go wrong with Unreal.

      Hey, do you mean the Beat 'em up? Sadly it's not gonna be any time soon. I'm not directly working on the game and haven't been since the last devlog about a year ago. The main bottlenecks with the game holding me back are animations and AI, so I've been spending the last couple of months practicing pixel art every day and reading books about AI implementation. I think I'm finally getting to a point where I can start to make some progress on the game soon though!
